Volleyball Nations League: Turning a Global Tournament Crowd into First Party Audience

The challenge

The Volleyball Nations League runs across multiple host cities, with five-day tournaments and twelve matches per event. Every one of those matches fills an arena with fans, and most of them are there for a single day. Across the tournament, VNL engaged with nearly 80,000 fans.

Volleyball World was already entertaining that crowd. What it could not do was measure any of it. In-venue fan moments like the clap-along cam ran on the big screen, drew a reaction, and left nothing behind. No participation count, no ROI story for sponsors, no way to pull a fan who showed up once into the Volleyball World app, social channels, or fantasy game.

The brief for year one was straightforward. Keep the arena loud, and start capturing who is in it.

What we built

CUE deployed seven products across the VNL calendar, activating at all 12 matches per tournament across 12 host cities.

PostUp put fans in the show with a custom branded frame
FanSee
brought supporters onto the big screen live
Light Show
turned the stands into a synchronized display
Fanatic Filters
brought branded AR to the crowd
Trivia Mania
and Polling Mania ran match-break moments including Player of the Match voting
Noise Meter
turned up the arena volume

Everything ran through a QR code. No app download, no dead zones, no friction between a fan seeing the prompt on the board and being in it.

The data layer

The activations were the visible half. The part that mattered commercially was the sign-up architecture underneath them.

CUE and Volleyball World designed a two-tier collection model. Trivia Mania, Polling Mania, and PostUp used front-gate collection, where fans sign up before playing, because those formats have a natural pause built in. Light Show, FanSee, and Prize Drop used back-gate collection, where the ask comes after the moment, so nothing slowed down a live crowd reaction.

At least one front-gate activation ran every match day, so single-day attendees still had a reason to hand over their details.

Three things made it work:
Persistent fan profiles.
A returning fan never re-enters what they already gave. That let Volleyball World collect in small pieces across a tournament instead of asking for everything on one long form.
Phone number validation via OTP.
Smoother than email verification, which forces fans to leave the page mid-activation.
Sponsor-specific sign-up configurations.
Each partner got its own branded sign-up screen and its own fields. A telecom sponsor collecting phone numbers and a beverage sponsor collecting emails ran side by side in the same tournament without either compromising.

Data exported directly to Volleyball World, with webhook and API options for a direct CRM feed. CUE activations also embed inside the Volleyball World app via webview, so the whole experience stays inside the brand.

What year two looks like

Year one established the infrastructure. Every activation is now a measurable, sellable asset with a fan record attached to it, which is the thing Volleyball World did not have twelve months ago.

Year two builds on the baseline. More matches activated per tournament. AR Prize Drop scaled from one host city to the full lineup. Deeper sponsor customization now that partner-specific sign-up flows are proven. Direct CRM integration so fan data lands in the Volleyball World ecosystem in real time rather than by export.

Volleyball World is just getting started and we are excited to be part of the momentum.
